Comparison of 2004, 2006, 2008 Data
Through a partnership between Great Lakes Center for Youth Development, Marquette Alger Regional Educational Services Agency, and twelve school districts across Marquette and Alger Counties, young people have taken Search Institute's Profiles of Student Life: Attitudes and Behaviors (PSL: AB) survey. The PSL: AB survey has been administered to local 8th, 10th and 12th grade students in 2004, 2006 and 2008. The PSL: AB survey offers a valuable picture of how young people perceive and interact with the community around them. The PSL: AB survey results offer communities insight into the youth environment in six major categories: Asset Profile, Thriving Indicators, Deficit Behaviors, Substance Use Risk-taking Behaviors, Other Risk-taking Behaviors, and Risk-taking Behavior Patterns. This section of the State of the Youth report will present aggregate PSL: AB survey results in all six major survey categories from 2004, 2006 and 2008. According to Search Institute, the PSL: AB survey is intended to provide a community with baseline and trend data on groups of students. Thereby, when the PSL: AB survey is administered at more than one point in time, it is appropriate to make comparisons in percentages for the same grade at two different points in time. Looking at the data and how it changes from survey year to survey year is valuable from a community mobilization and planning perspective.
