In 1997, 2000, and 2002, communities in Marquette and Alger Counties measured the number of Developmental Assets youth have with the Search Institute’s Profiles of Student Life: Attitudes and Behaviors (PSL: AB) survey. A small, gradual increase has been experienced over time in the average number of assets that students possess. A total of 2,128 youth were surveyed in 2002. These youth reported having 18.6 of the 40 Developmental Assets. While this trend is encouraging, many assets are still quite low, and there is much more work to be done. This report provides vital data about youth assets and the power of asset building.

In this section of the State of the Youth report, the reader will find results of the 2002 PSL: AB survey broken out into the six major survey areas: Assets Profile, Deficit Behaviors, Thriving Indicators, Substance Use Risk-Taking Behaviors, Risk-Taking Behaviors, and Risk-Taking Behavior Patterns. There are also several comparisons available to the reader in this section. The comparison data used in this section is from Search Institutes report, The Asset Approach, 40 Elements of Healthy Development. It is important for the reader to remember that this data from the Search Institute is not a national representative sample. This comparison data is made available for local planners to reflect upon the similarities and differences between the local data set and a larger pool of data.
