Type of Jobs by Gender

Most of the females who reported working outside the home to earn money did so through babysitting opportunities. Most of the males who worked outside the home to earn money reported work in the “other” category with food service and the hospitality industry as the most prominently defined opportunities. Of youth who reported working, 8th grade students (32%) are more likely than 10th graders (19%) and 12th graders (7%) to earn money through babysitting opportunities. Eighth grade students are also more likely to deliver newspapers. Although young people in all three grades reported working in food service and as a cashier, 12th graders are much more likely than the younger students to hold these positions.
