2002 Adolescent Companion Survey – Sidebar Survey

During the summer of 2002, Great Lakes Center for Youth Development (GLCYD) staff conducted interviews with over 40 community organizations including schools, nonprofit organizations, committees, and individuals. These interviews were designed to discover from our constituents how data from the Profiles of Student Life: Attitudes and Behaviors (PSL: AB) survey was currently being used, what data was most helpful in understanding the needs of adolescents, and whether there were information needs that were not met through the PSL: AB survey. Through these interviews, GLCYD discovered four major areas of interest: current employment status, Career Pathways, desire to stay/leave the area after school, and second-hand smoking.

In the Career Pathways area, GLCYD was interested in finding out what Career Pathways youth selected in school, when they make these decisions about Career Pathways, and how they differ by gender. Also, a critical concern of many community leaders is that many of our young people leave the region (Upper Peninsula). The companion survey was designed to find out if they want to leave and why. Young people were also asked to report on what they like and dislike about the area. Lastly, the companion survey sought to gather information on the perceptions young people hold about second-hand smoke.

The results of this survey are presented over the next several pages of this report. Questions and/or comments about the survey results can be forwarded to Judy Watson Olson, President for the Great Lakes Center for Youth Development, jwatsonolson@glcyd.org.
