Average Hours Worked Per Week by Gender

The majority of young people reported working 1-5 hours per week on average. As the graph above illustrates, the percent of males and females decreases as the number of average hours of work per week increases. It is also interesting to note the difference between males and females in each category do not vary greatly. Eighth grade students are more likely (64%) than 10th (49%) and 12th (38%) grade students to work 1-5 hours per week. However, the percent of 8th, 10th, and 12th grade students in the 6-10 average hour per week category is very consistent across grades with 22%, 21%, and 21% of students reporting this average rate of hours per week respectively.
