Career PathwaysWhen the students were asked about Career Pathways, most males and females have focused on a particular Pathway. However, 19% of males and 23% of females indicated they are undecided. The gender differences in the Engineering and Health Sciences Pathways are striking. Twenty-seven percent of males and 2 % of females have selected the Engineering Pathway, a 25-point spread based on gender. The Health Sciences Pathway also has a significant gender difference reflecting a 19-point-spread with 5% of males and 24% of females selecting this Pathway. Students are deciding their Career Pathways early with 71% of 8th grade students reporting they have selected a Pathway. Across grades, the percent of youth in the Engineering and Natural Resources Pathways remain stable with only a one or two point movement from 8th to 12th grade. The other Career Pathways show some significant variation by grade. When students were asked where they would like to live as an adult, the majority of them reported they would like to live somewhere in the United States. Approximately 10% of 8th, 10th, and 12th grade students indicated they would like to stay in Marquette or Alger County. Even fewer youth said they would like to live in the Upper Peninsula. This information did not vary significantly by gender. Twenty-two percent of males and 15% of females indicated they would like to live in either Marquette or Alger County or the Upper Peninsula. Thirty-three percent of males and 42% of females reported they would like to live in the United States. Of young people who reported they would like to stay in the local area as an adult, 75% of males and 79% of females indicated they are either somewhat confident or very confident they would be able to find a job.
