Perceptions of Secondhand Smoke

Almost all young people reported they have seen and heard advertisements about the dangers of secondhand smoke. Furthermore, most young people believe secondhand smoke is bad for their health. However, only 27% of 8th graders, 18% of 10th graders, and 12% of 12th graders reported they always avoid going places where smoking is allowed. Most youth reported they either often or at least sometimes avoid places where smoking is allowed; 56% of 8th graders, 55% of 10th graders, and 51% of 12th grade students reported this behavior. Of youth who reported they work outside the home, 57% of the students work in a tobacco-free environment.
