The LEAGUE, a program of service learningThe Great Lakes Center for Youth Development is pleased to introduce an exciting program of service learning to the Upper Peninsula – The LEAGUE Curriculum by Learning to Give. The LEAGUE is a school and web-based system that builds character and empowers young people to “do good” in their community, the nation and the world. The program includes several features that make it unique and effective:
The LEAGUE, founded in 2005, is international in scope and growing in Michigan. The program is not yet established in the U.P., and the Center hopes to change that. Why is the Center so excited about The LEAGUE? Much of our focus is on the 40 Developmental Assets identified by Search Institute as the building blocks that young people need to grow up healthy, competent and caring. The “service to others,” asset is a key to building other assets. The Center supports The LEAGUE as an excellent vehicle for instilling the ideal of service to others in children. The LEAGUE is fun, effective and FREE to schools. It can be implemented by a single classroom, a whole school or an entire district. The Center is working closely with The LEAGUE Michigan to identify schools that wish to participate. If your school would like to schedule a LEAGUE presentation or training session for school personnel, or if you would like further information about The LEAGUE, contact Linda Remsburg at the Center at 906-228-8919 ext. 26 or e-mail lremsburg@glcyd.org.
