Survey UsageThe Profiles of Student Life: Attitudes and Behavior (PSL:AB) survey is intended to provide a community with baseline and trend data on groups of students. It was not designed as a program evaluation or individual assessment tool, and therefore, it is limited in its effectiveness as an evaluation instrument. When the PSL:AB survey is administered at more than one point in time, it is appropriate to make comparisons in percentages for the same grade at two different points in time (e.g., 10th graders in spring 2002 to 10th graders in the spring 2004). This is the type of data comparison readers will find in the State of the Youth report. However, comparing the same student class over time (e.g., 10th graders in the spring of 2002 to 12th graders in the spring of 2004) is problematic. Results for a class may change in unpredictable ways due to factors such as an influx of new students, students moving away, and/or students dropping out. These changes affect the comparability of the data. Great Lakes Center for Youth Development does not present data in this fashion and strongly cautions readers against considering the data held within this report in this way.
