If the Upper Peninsula was a village of 100 children, in any given year...

 

90 would be White
6 would be Native American
1 would be African American
1 would be Asian
2 would be Hispanic
71 would live in a married couple family
17 would live in a single mother family
6 would live in a single father family

33 would have been born to an unmarried mother
8 would not have had paternity established at birth
10 would have been born to a teenage mother
6 would have been born at low birthweight
22 would have been born receiving less than adequate prenatal care
11 would have been born to a mother without a high school diploma
1 would die before their first birthday

Among young children…
77 would be fully immunized (under age 3)
19 would have been tested for lead poisoning (ages 1-6)
1 of those tested would have been lead poisoned (ages 1-6)
1 would have been hospitalized for asthma (under age 5)

Among all children under age 18…
6 would live in a family investigated for child abuse or neglect
1 would be a confirmed victim of abuse or neglect
1 would have been placed in out-of-home care

73 would live in families where all parents were working
6 would live in families where no parents were working
17 would live in poverty
38 would rely on Medicaid or MIChild for health insurance
40 of school-age would receive subsidized school meals
17 would be owed child support
10 of those owed child support would receive none

Among teenagers…
2 would have dropped out of high school
3 would have begun a new family by having a baby themselves

Among adults, including parents…
15 would have less than a high school diploma
17 would have at least a bachelor’s degree
